California Gray Whale
This trip takes you to the Pacific Ocean side of Baja. Sheltered by a barrier island of sand, beautiful Magdalena Bay offers new adventure every day.

You can paddle a sea kayak from base camp to explore the glassy bay and its mangrove estuary. Take a short walk over the barrier island sand dunes to enjoy miles of uninhabited Pacific Ocean beach, dotted with shells. Fish, hike or beachcomb. See abundant wintering and resident species of birds.

Kayaking in 'Mag Bay'
You'll go whale watching for two days with our experienced guides, spotting California Gray Whales from a panga (a Mexican skiff). Hunted almost to extinction, these marine mammals have made an impressive comeback.

Each year they migrate 5000 miles from the Bering Sea to Baja's Pacific lagoons to mate and to give birth. The water is calm and the days are warm and leisurely, perfect conditions for a whale's winter vacation! On one of our whale-watching days we'll even stop at a small Mexican community on Isla Magdalena.

Up close with the whales.

Our expert U.S. and local guides teach you how to kayak safely and they prepare delicious dutch oven meals in camp. Fresh fish are available and the clamming near camp can be fun. If we're lucky, lobster sometimes ends up on the menu!

Experience the warmth and exotic beauty of Baja in this mid-winter escape, offered in late January and February.
