J-Rig in Cataract Canyon
On this popular 4-day expedition we travel by J-Rig, the "workhorse of the Colorado river". The versatility of this stable, motorized craft gives you a comfortable ride through the wilderness of Canyonlands National Park.

At the start of our journey, we enjoy the tranquil upper section of the river as it meanders through prehistoric sandstone cliffs. We have time to float quietly, to swim and to take photos at Dead Horse Point, Lathrop Canyon and the remote Doll House area in the Maze. Optional side hikes let us explore ancient Anasazi ruins and side canyons with pristine swimming holes.

We camp on the river's sandy beaches where you can socialize, relax and enjoy the night sky while your guides cook a hearty western-style dutch oven meal.

Negotiating the rapids
Further downriver we reach the confluence of the Green and Colorado rivers, at the heart of Canyonlands National Park. The rapids of Cataract Canyon lie just ahead.

In May and June spring run-off from the Rocky Mountains creates some of the best whitewater action in North America. In the summer and fall the rapids are smaller, but still thrilling.

We navigate such legendary rapids as Satan's Gut, Little Niagara, and Hell To Pay, before arriving at the granddaddy of them all -- the Big Drops. After an action-packed day of whitewater river running we arrive at our final camp.

Our river adventure ends the next day at Lake Powell's Hite Marina. Here many of our guests opt to take a scenic flight back over Cataract Canyon to Moab, describing their 35-minute journey as the "icing on the cake". (More return options are detailed below.) Other guests continue on, taking a NAVTEC jeep trip into Canyonlands National Park for two more nights.
